Denise Penizzotto is a visual artist in NYC and professor at the City University of NY Hunter College. Her research focuses on the artistic dimensions of religion- sacred symbols and systems as transcendent, transient and transitional; her studio practice applies her research inquiries to large scale works on canvas.
Penizzotto is a two time recipient of the NYC Metropolitan Museum of Art’s in situ copyist program and a three-time participant in “Artists of the 5 Boroughs” Denise Bibro Gallery, NYC. She has a permanent installation of 6 paintings at NYC Mt. Sinai Hospital. Her work has been shown at NYC White Gallery, NoMAA, among others and internationally in Osaka, Japan and Singapore. She is the Brooklyn Academy of Music Harvey Theater Renovation and Restoration Artist and a recipient of a Mellon Foundation Grant for her project “Sacred and Profane: Contemporary Art in Sacred Space.” She received a merit fellowship for her continuing research/studio application in sacred art of the secular and profane worlds from Harvard Divinity. She currently teaches religion and arts at CUNY Hunter NYC while keeping an active studio and curatorial practice.
